Why “Schraubfabrik”?
Jan Kalt’s first recording studio was based at Soundfabrik in Fürth in the Odenwald. Before Google Maps existed, finding the studio mattered. With permission from Soundfabrik owner Wolfgang Klingelhöfer, Jan chose a name and lettering inspired by Soundfabrik, a well-known guitar and bass shop in the region. This helped people know where to find the studio. There was plenty of sound-tweaking going on, too. In the early years, the studio was full of hardware, mixing desks, buttons and knobs, and the sound was adjusted until everything was just right. In German, this kind of tweaking is often called “schrauben”, literally turning screws. The term has since become common in music magazines and blogs: it is no longer reserved for garages and mechanics. A “Soundschrauber” is simply an informal name for a sound engineer working on a studio recording.
